HPE Discover 2020: CEO Antonio Neri Declares ‘Age of Insight’ Has Arrived

These are challenging times. The global pandemic wreaked havoc on the economy and businesses were thrust into a new normal. But HPE is built for this, argued CEO Antonio Neri in his keynote address at the HPE Discover 2020 virtual conference.

“At HPE, our purpose is to advance the way people live and work. So, in challenges like this, this is why HPE exists,” he said. “We consider it our responsibility to help the world navigate the pandemic.”

Neri reminded the audience that HPE began predicting the enterprise of the future would be “edge-centric, cloud-enabled and data-driven” three years ago. Recent events have brought us to this world sooner than expected, Neri added. “This requires the right technology, expertise and financial flexibility to help businesses accelerate their digital transformation.”

HPE has worked hard to help organizations manage successfully through the crisis, he said. For example, the public school system in Bentonville, Ark., had one business day to move 18,000 students and 1,200 teachers to virtual learning. Shortly after this, a photo emerged of students huddled just outside the school on a cold, rainy day in order to use the building’s Wi-Fi, as their families did not have internet access at home. A local Aruba team stepped up to create a Wi-Fi connected area for students, families and teachers in the school parking lot.

HPE also provided free access to high-performance computing resources to the White House and to university researchers to support their efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, Neri said.[

How HPE Managed the Challenge of COVID-19

While HPE was doing its part to help organizations across the globe stay up and running, it faced challenges of its own when the pandemic hit.

“Like many organizations, we learned a lot during this event,” said Liz Joyce, CISO for HPE. “We have a good history at HPE when it comes to business continuity and resilience, but even we were not prepared for a global pandemic, so we had to very quickly adapt and react.”

Joyce said HPE has been thinking in terms of a new normal rather than managing through a finite crisis. “How do we work remotely and still get the same or better outcomes, but also keep people safe as they return to work sites?” she said.

From the Information Age to the Age of Insight

The past decade has been all about the information age. It has seemed that everything is now connected to the web and has a sensor, from your phone to your refrigerator and your car. The Internet of Things was born, and vast amounts of data exploded.

“The next decade must be about insights and discoveries that are shared to elevate every human being on this planet,” said Neri. “Today, we are entering the age of insight.” This is where insights and data can combine with other insights and data, and ideas can have ideas of their own, he said. Everything from the edge to the cloud can be connected by a single force to help create a better experience and new opportunities. From analysis at the edge to operations in the cloud, wherever your data and applications are, they will be faster, accessible and more secure.

“This new form of digital transformation is to build an edge-to-cloud platform that connects, protects, analyzes and acts on all your data,” said Neri. This will bring agility to applications to unlock a business’s full potential, he added. The edge-to-cloud platform will allow data to move without constraint.

 “Almost 10 years after the public cloud emerged, more than 70 percent of apps and data are still outside the public cloud,” noted Neri. As a result, there exist two divergent operating models, one in the cloud and one on-premises, and organizations are paying to maintain them both, he continued. “In the next wave of digital transformation, we will shift from a cloud-first mandate to a cloud-everywhere mandate,” said Neri.

HPE Shifts Its Platform as a Service Strategy

The world is shifting from large centralized data centers to small data centers at the edge, where data is being collected that is highly distributed. “This new shift demands a common cloud platform that can put the agility and intelligence close to your data sources to create real-time insights everywhere,” said Neri.

Today, public clouds have extended their platforms into the data center in what Gartner refers to as distributed cloud. “The problem is that these solutions were architected to be very centralized and rely on connectivity to their control plane,” said Neri. That’s a challenge for businesses, he said, because “data transfer and egress is expensive.”

HPE announced the next generation of HPE GreenLake cloud services, designed to help businesses resolve the costs and complexity of managing multiple operating models when it comes to their applications. “This will allow you to quickly deliver services to your developers, data scientists and lines of business so that they can create solutions that align with a business’s customers, protect your business from risk and streamline your operations,” Neri said. All the new cloud services can be deployed and run on the user’s choice of 17 pre-integrated, workload-optimized configurations, available in small, medium or large sizes. These solutions can be delivered to the edge, colocation or data center and are pay-per-use and fully scalable.

HPE also rolled out solutions for private clouds, allowing users to generate new virtual machines or containers in as little as five clicks.

To help with cloud services on the intelligent edge, HPE is creating the Aruba Edge Services Platform (ESP). “This product will unify, secure and automate network operations and serve as the foundation for realizing the full potential of the edge,” said Neri. “HPE GreenLake is the cloud that comes to you.”

Data centers: Alive and well, and living at the edge

A survey of almost 900 IT practitioners and data center operators provides insight into how data centers are adapting, especially around edge computing, and the challenges they continue to face when it comes to staffing and diversity.

A recent Uptime Institute Data Center Industry Survey shows that data centers are rapidly adapting to the changing landscape in terms of how they are used and the services they deliver. The bad news is that outages or severe service degradation have increased over the past three years, according to half of the respondents, and of those problems, 80 percent were preventable.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of data centers are seeing their primary emphasis shift to hybrid IT operations. Making use of both private and public cloud infrastructures, data centers remain relevant because they become the pivot point for hybrid IT. They enable enterprises to cost-effectively deploy services and applications and provide the flexibility once thought available only from pure cloud deployments. The survey also indicates that hybrid IT adoption is the easy part of updating data centers. Future growth in data center operations will need a significant investment in data center processes and operations.

What’s on the data center horizon:

Perhaps the most obvious of the upcoming challenges is edge computing. More than 40 percent of respondents said they see the edge as the future of the enterprise environment and that computing will be handled by data centers focused on edge tasks that the businesses directly own or operate. Fewer than 15 percent see this as a task that can be completely outsourced to a public cloud provider. However, the nature of edge data centers remains unclear, with arguments being made for a range of models, including colocation, smaller edge data centers, micro data centers, solely owned and operated facilities, and shared services. But there is little doubt that edge services are a significant part of the future of the data center.

Another significant change is how data centers are being used. Previously, rack density was considered a major indicator of data center use. The introduction of cloud, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing (HPC) services seems to have changed the focus. The energy consumption model that rack density indicated has bifurcated. Rather than a general increase in density, the survey indicates that the model is now split in two directions.

Data centers where a lot of hybrid IT and general-purpose computing workloads occur, the average rack density is starting to decrease. However, this is offset by the rack density increase in data centers with a focus on AI and HPC. Almost 20 percent of the respondents with these types of environments reported rack density exceeding 30 kilowatts per rack, with 5 percent noting they have rack densities of more than 50 kW per rack. That’s almost double the rack density found in previously deployed high-availability data centers and more than five times the bottom third of data centers, which see densities of less than 10 kW.

Management tools are the future:

The prevalence of data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools is a key finding. While there was a significant failure rate in the successful adoption of these tools—more 35 percent reported—better than 50 percent saw them deployed across their environments. Also significant is the understanding that this isn’t going to be enough and that in the future, there will be a major need to find tools that allow management across the hybrid environment, reaching into the privately operated data center and out into the public cloud. These types of management tools will be critical as hybrid IT expands into edge computing.

Staffing and diversity remain a problem:

Finding and hiring good staff is challenging. Almost 40 percent reported this as an ongoing issue despite the fact that a third of respondents reported past or pending staffing reductions. While a third said they have problems finding people to fill specific technical roles, the most common problem, cited by more than 50 percent of respondents, is finding solid candidates for the basics of data center staffing, operations, and management roles.

The report also shows a significant lack of diversity in data center staffing. More than half reported that women make up less than 6 percent of data center staff, and more than 70 percent don’t perceive this as a problem.

The need for additional skills in the data center was identified as important for business growth. However, the data center staff shortages will continue. Improving diversity can only result in a better candidate pool.

Data centers have become more energy efficient:

Last is an issue data centers have long been disparaged for: energy usage. While its overall value as a metric is in some dispute, using power usage effectiveness (PUE) as a long-term measure of energy efficiency is an effective way of measuring how successful data centers are in reducing their energy footprint. Uptime Institute’s research shows that over the past decade, average PUE reported by its members has dropped from 2.5 to 1.58. This reflects the data center industry’s commitment to delivering services in a more cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient way.

SMB(Server Message Block):

SMB is a network protocol used by Windows-based computers that allows systems within the same network to share files. It allows computers connected to the same network or domain to access files from other local computers as easily as if they were on the computer’s local hard drive.

Not only does SMB allow computers to share files, but it also enables computers to share printers and even serial ports from other computers within the network. For example, a computer connected to a Windows network could print a document on a printer connected to another computer on the network, as long as both machines support the SMB protocol.

Though SMB was originally developed for Windows, it can also be used by other platforms, including Unix and Mac OS X, using a software implementation called Samba. By using Samba instructions, Mac, Windows, and Unix computers can share the same files, folders, and printers. This is great for those Windows-based office networks where there is a graphic designer who refuses to use anything but a Mac and a tech guy who does everything on his Linux machine.
